Functional Skills Maths & English for Home Educated learners
Does your young person need a recognised Maths or English qualification, but the traditional GCSE route doesn’t feel like the right fit? Our small, supportive Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 classes are open to all home-educated learners. Whether your child has SEND or simply prefers a smaller, more personalised learning environment, they will be supported at an appropriate pace.
Courses run from the 2nd of November to the 11th of December 2026

What are
Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are recognised qualifications in Maths and English that focus on skills we actually use in everyday life, further study and the workplace. Rather than learning simply to pass an exam, learners develop the confidence to understand, apply and use their Maths and English in practical situations.
📘 Functional Skills Maths develops areas such as:
• Number skills
• Fractions, decimals and percentages
• Money and everyday calculations
• Measures, shape and space
• Understanding information and data
• Problem solving in realistic situations
📗 Functional Skills English develops:
• Reading and understanding different texts
• Writing clearly for different purposes
• Spelling, punctuation and grammar
• Speaking, listening and communicating
• Using English confidently in everyday and workplace situations.
Functional Skills are available from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. Entry Level 3 is the highest Entry Level qualification and can provide a stepping stone towards Level 1. Level 1 is a Level 1 qualification, while Level 2 is at the same qualification level as GCSE grades 4–9. Functional Skills is a different qualification from GCSE, with a greater emphasis on applying skills in practical and real-life contexts.
It can be a particularly useful route for learners who need a recognised qualification but may prefer a more practical approach to Maths and English.

Specialist Teaching
Your child will be taught by a highly experienced qualified teacher with specialist expertise in SEND, literacy and dyslexia. However, our classes are inclusive and therefore available to both SEN and non-SEN children.
✨ PGCE & Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
✨ Master’s Degree in Special & Inclusive Education
✨ Qualified Dyslexia Teacher & Assessor
✨ Literacy Specialist
✨ Qualified Child, Adolescent & Family Therapist
✨ Extensive experience supporting learners with dyslexia, ADHD, autism and additional learning needs
✨ Over 25 years of experience across primary, secondary and special education
My approach is calm, encouraging and highly supportive. I understand that learners may arrive with gaps in their knowledge, low confidence or previous experiences of education that have not worked well for them.
Classes are therefore deliberately limited to a maximum of six learners, allowing plenty of individual attention, opportunities to ask questions and support at an appropriate pace.
The aim is not simply to prepare learners for an exam, but to help them understand what they are learning, build confidence and develop practical Maths and English skills they can use beyond the classroom.

Not Sure Which Level is Right?
That’s absolutely fine.
After booking, you’ll receive a short placement activity for your young person to complete at home.
A parent or carer should stay nearby to help with any technical issues, but the activity should be completed as independently as possible so that it gives an accurate picture of the learner’s current skills.
Once completed, simply photograph or scan the activity and send it back by WhatsApp or email.
This helps us identify whether Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2 is likely to be the most suitable starting point.
The placement is provisional and can be adjusted after the first class if needed.

How Long Do the
Programmes Take?
Every learner is different, so there is no fixed timescale.
Some young people may begin at Entry Level 3, while others may be ready for Level 1 or Level 2. Progress depends on their starting point, confidence and how quickly they feel ready to move on.
The aim is not to rush learners through a level, but to help them build secure skills and confidence along the way.
Learners can choose whether they would like to work towards a Functional Skills exam or simply use the programme to improve their general Maths and English skills. There is no pressure to take an exam unless it is the right goal for them.
Classes are booked in short blocks, so families can continue for as long as the programme is helpful and appropriate.
Courses run from the
2nd of November to the 11th of December 2026

How To Join
After joining, I will have a brief conversation with the parent/carer and learner to find out a little more about their needs and current working level, so we can make sure the class is appropriate for them.
🌱 Our classes are particularly suitable for learners who may:
• Prefer a small group rather than a large classroom
• Need to rebuild confidence in Maths or English
• Benefit from a patient, SEND-aware approach
• Be looking for an alternative pathway to gaining a recognised qualification
• Want practical skills that are useful beyond an exam
📩 Places are limited.
Please send me a private message if you would like more information, would like to register your interest, or are unsure what level is appropriate for your young person.
Examination fees are separate from tuition.
